Definition

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurological disorder that can affect a person's ability to attend to a single task, control impulses and/or may cause hyperactivity.

Common Characteristics

A common characteristic is for a student to have diffcult time attending to one task at a time. He or she may be easily distracted by environmental disruptions. Another common difficulty is holding onto ideas or answers until the appropriate time to respond or speaking before thinking and other impulse control. Students with hyperactivity are often seen as bundles of energy.

What Do You Expect?

Students who have a predictable, consistent routine and environment are more likely to have success. When they know what to expect and what is expected of them, they are able to perform better.

Interventions

The interventions for ADHD are varied. Depending on the student, simple environmental accommodations can help alleviate distractions. For overly active students an accomodation may be allowing the student to engage in gross motor activities before sitting for periods of time. In other cases, psychotropic medications are used to treat symptoms. In either case, open communication between school and home is extremely important.
